  1. Hypothyroidism – Making You Mindful Of The Typical Symptoms

    January 28, 2012 by admin

Knowing the symptoms of hypothyroidism can help you get the help you need to treat this problem. Typically, many women will have an underactive thyroid. Sometimes this illness is hard to detect, even though there are several symptoms associated with this particular condition that can occur at once. In the following paragraphs, we will discuss hypothyroidism, it’s many symptoms, and what you can do if you have this disease. The understanding of such symptoms will not only save your life but funds as well on expensive treatments, just like my aunt did. If not for these few ideas, she probably had gone through an operation which may use up her savings from her ultrasound technician salary.

People with hypothyroidism often have sore muscles, cramps or numbness in various parts of their body. Perhaps you have joints that are sore, or perhaps your knees are swelling. Many people have arthritis, and carpal tunnel syndrome, which may make it difficult to properly diagnose this condition. It is completely possible to be mis-diagnosed when all of these symptoms are so similar. Your doctor may be wrong if they diagnose you with this condition. Anyone that suffers from arthritis can be given medication that sometimes can cause a thyroid imbalance. And if you do not treat your thyroid, you risk developing arthritis anyway because autoimmune diseases are easy to contract. The bottom line is that you need to get your thyroid checked out thoroughly if you have excessive muscle and joint pain. Some various training seminars that I’ve joined before at different ultrasound technician schools in California made me realize how vital it is to be familiar with thyroid problems before it’s too late.

Your skin, hair, and fingernails are just some of the areas where you will notice changes due to lack of thyroid hormone. If you’ve noticed that you seem to be sweating less, be advised that this, also, is a typical symptom of a thyroid disorder. These problems all result from the impact hypothyroidism has on your metabolism. The texture of your skin may change, often becoming drier. Increased hair loss, as well as dry, brittle hair, may result. Like your hair and your skin, you may also experience dry, brittle fingernails that break easily. Even your eyebrows aren’t immune. They can become thin or vanish altogether. Of course, these are symptoms common to other disorders, as well as thyroid disorder. Since your main problem here is your thyroid gland, it won’t do much good to treat your skin or hair directly, which is why a correct diagnosis is important.

If you suspect that you have a thyroid condition, it’s imperative that you obtain a correct diagnosis even if you have to have several tests and visit your doctor frequently. Perhaps your thyroid gland manufacturers too much or too little of the essential hormone that is needed to regulate your metabolism. Hyperthyroidism is the overproduction of this essential hormone and just the opposite of hypothyroidism, which we have been discussing. However, the symptoms of both thyroid disorders are basically the same. Hyperthyroidism, however, usually results in sudden weight loss, and hypothyroidism causes individuals to become overweight. Your doctor will discuss your symptoms with you and perform the necessary tests to figure out if you have one of the common thyroid disorders. Diagnosing hypothyroidism is often not as easy as you would think. Anyone that has had a thyroid problem understands that there are many symptoms that can come about due to this disorder. Many of the symptoms, such as weight gain, muscle pain and fatigue, can also be caused by a wide variety of conditions. That’s why it’s essential to get examined by a doctor you have confidence in to determine if your symptoms are due to hypothyroidism or something else.

  2. Let’s Talk the Pain of Fibromyalgia

    December 10, 2011 by admin

As I start to get tied easily and feel pain in several areas of my body, I started looking for cause of these symptoms. I was eventually diagnosed with fibromyalgia, but my research did not stop there. I even studied fibromyalgia pain treatment drugs.

There are many prescriptions out there that states fibromyalgia to be a condition caused by stress in our nervous system. So where’s the problem? The problem is that professionals in the medical field are not in agreement about that issue! The understanding about this condition is still misunderstood and that is why I am here to clarify it.

The main problem that I faced was sceptical doctors. There are numerous physicians who do not take the illness seriously or think it is merely the result of preexisting clinical depression. Some will go so far as to imply that as long as you recover from prolonged sadness, the pain and fatigue will vanish. The reason that they give are absurd.

With people taking more and more prescription drugs, the side effects could be the cause of the deteriorating life. For me, one of the experiences I had was that I almost fell off my chair during my lecture. I would also fall asleep frequently when I was simply sitting still. I soon had to find various ways to treat sore muscles from fibromyalgia.

So, always check for side effects from the medication that you are planning to take.

There are better pain management methods than taking drugs. You can go to massages or acupuncture centres to have a relaxing time. With massages, you can reduce the inflammation in your body that causes body aches. You can even try out fibromyalgia occupational therapy for pain relief.

But you should always consult a health consultant before going for a massage because they can sometime be quiet painful. Get to know a masseur and visit her frequently in order to build a good relationship. Over time, they will be able to know your preferences over the massage. With my therapist, she will focus more on my thigh because that is where I will the most pain.

As for acupuncture, you must be careful because constant treatments of this kind might increase you desire to sleep after the therapy. So it is better not to drive after your treatment. When you go to this sort of treatment, spare out more time to rest after the therapy.

Taking too much NSAIDs will harm your kidney. So take less of them. Talk to your doctor to find out more information.

  3. Fibromyalgia Facts

    November 28, 2011 by admin

Fibromyalgia has always been regarded as a disease which is very mysterious. There is not much understanding about fibromyalgia which makes it a difficult disease to be diagnosed. That’s bad news for fibromyalgia care too. Up to date, it is still defined to be a syndrome instead of a disease. Fibromyalgia is a syndrome that carries a lot of symptoms. Some of the symptoms like migraine can be an illness on its own. But there are also times where they are related to fibromyalgia. The various symptoms may not always cause fibromyalgia. In most cases, they are often diagnose as other illness.

There is not specific medical test to determine if fibromyalgia is present on a patient.

Most commonly, fibromyalgia is related to symptoms that causes pain at several tender points of a person. With this in mind, two specific criteria have been set by the America College of Rheumatology to determine the presence of fibromyalgia. For the fibromyalgia to be present, there must be pain in 11 out of the 18 tender points of the body which has lasted for at least 3 months. You need to identify these tender points for effective fibromyalgia treatment. Pain at tender points of the body is a very important sign that can lead to the diagnosed of fibromyalgia.

3 main symptoms that always comes with the pain are fatigue, lack of sleep and memory abilities decreased. You will be able to see that the patient will always seem tired and having trouble doing the simplest task. You will also see that they cannot remember new information given to them. They definitely have a problem with this if they are distracted. This condition is called “fibro fog.” Patients have difficulty gong to sleep as well as staying asleep. There are also other symptoms which includes dizziness, numbness and tingling in various areas of their body, difficulty to find balance as well as weak muscles. Some conditions that may co-exist with the syndrome are depression, headaches, bowel problems, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, and osteoarthritis.

Although the symptoms are chronic, the intensity of them will vary from day to day and from hour to hour in any one day. Because of this, it is difficult for patients to lead a normal life like going to school or work. They can’t plan an activity, as they can’t predict whether they will be able to carry it out or not. Your fibromyalgia doctors would give you a full plan. When the pain comes, it can be terrifying because it disables you making you unable to perform any sort of activity. The pain usually comes and affects your entire body. It can be felt in every muscle and joints and tendons in your body. Changes in weather, over use of strength and stress are the things that may trigger the pain.

Based on reports, 3-5% of the population in America are suffering from fibromyalgia. It can occur in all age groups at any time but is more likely to appear during early and middle adulthood. Fibromyalgia does not have any preferences towards a specific gender but more women are said to be having this syndrome. Genetics may play a role, as the syndrome tends to run in families. You are more likely to get fibromyalgia if you are already suffering from rheumatic disease which includes arthritis, lupus and rheumatoid. Based on statistics, out of the fibromyalgia patients, 25% are unable to hold their job. It is difficult to treat fibromyalgia. The drug Lyrica was approved in the year 2007 by the FDA as the first drug used to combat this syndrome. There are no other medications yet on the market except Lyrica. However, drugs like Neurotin and Vioxx was able to reduce the pain for fibromyalgia sufferers. In addition, Pozac and Elavil are also effective in treating the symptoms.
